Book Review: The Late Show

Hello I’m R E Fort and welcome to my podcast and this episode of Book Reviews. In this review, I’m covering the first book in the Renee Ballard series named The Late Show, by one of my favorite authors Michael Connelly. The track behind my voice in this post is Just Stay from my CD Told Ya. You can find this CD and others on all music streaming services and all my music can be found on my website refort.co. Let’s get to the review.

Book Review of The Late Show

The main character in The Late Show, is a detective named Renee Ballard. Renee is a detective with the LAPD and because of politics on the force, she’s working what they call the Late Show or the overnight shift.

Working the Late Show, detectives pickup a lot of cases but seldom close them. This night she and her partner pick up a few cases but one of the cases, she really feels she has to see it through. One of the cases was of a women found dumped and hanging on for life. She was found by a patrol car and brought to a hospital. The only words she has said coming in and out of concession is The Upside Down House. The other case she is dispatched to is a shooting at a night club. While at the hospital waiting for the first cases victim to wake up, a victim from the night club shooting is sent to the same hospital. Also hanging on to life by dies while they struggle to save her life.

After the second cases victim passes she is order to the night club shooting site along with other detectives including her old partner collecting evidence. When she spots him do something unexcepted, pocketing evidence.

As she begins trying to figure out who would walk into a night club and shot three people sitting a table. She starts to believe the shouter maybe a cop. With in days of the shooting her ex-partner is shot and killed escalating the case for her, to figure out if his death is tied to the night club shooting.

As I mentioned an the beginning of this review, I’m a huge fan of Michael Connelly and this story shows why. The story has subplots and side stories that are always just as complying as the main case. Each one a story on its on. This story is one heck of a page turner.

Now, on my scale of 1 to 5, 1 being don’t bother and 5 a real page turner, I have to give The Late Show, a solid, 5.
