Book Review: Scheme

In Scheme the main character is a detective named Jake Sloan. The story opens with a police officer disarming a IED that was left outside a hospital. After that IED was successfully disarmed they find a poem that seems to point to another IED but they have no way to figure out where it is.

Sloan, knows they have short time to figure out where this new IED is and how to disarm it. Knowing that poetry is outside his wheel house, Sloan and the department engage the FBI and their coding breakers to figure it out. As they look over the poem they realize that they cant help but suggest they look for someone that is a professional in poetry.

Sloan is now paired with a English professor named Ciara Hawkins. They begin working together trying to figure out where the next bomb is and what is on the mind of the bomber. Sloan begins to wonder why no one has taken credit for the first bomb and why this complex method of communicating through poems and not a simple code. With time running out they are under the gun to find and stop this mad man.

As I mentioned an the beginning of this review, I’m a huge fan of Jeffery Deaver and this short story show why. He always creates captivating characters and story lines. This story is one heck of a page turner. I actually read this book twice just for fun. Now, on my scale of 1 to 5, 1 being don’t bother and 5 a real page turner, I have to give Scheme, a solid, 5.
